This is a step-by-step walkthrough of the TryHackMe room Network Fundamentals: What is Neworking.

Task 1: What is Networking?

Question 1: “What is the key term for devices that are connected together?”

Per THM “Networks are simply things connected.”

Task 3: Identifying Devices on a Network

Question 3: “What does the term IP stand for?”

Per THM: Internet Protocol

Question 4: “What is each section of an IP address called?”

Question 5: “How many sections (in digits) does an IP address have?

Per THM: An IP address is a set of numbers that are divided into four octets.

Question 6: “What does the term ‘MAC’ stand for?”

Per THM: “Media Access Control”

Question 7: “Deploy the interactive lab using the “view Site” button and spoof your MAC address to access the site. What is the flag?”

Per the instructions, you will need to click on the “View Site” button:

Copy Alice’s MAC Address and copy it into Bob’s MAC Address. Scroll down and click on “Request Site”.

Wait a few seconds and the flag will be revealed!

Copy and paste the flag into the question field:

Task 4: Ping (ICMP)

Question 8: “What protocol does ping use?”

Per THM: “Ping uses ICMP”

Question 9: “What is the syntax to ping 10.10.10.10?”

Answer: ping 10.10.10.10

Question 10: “What flag do you get when you ping 8.8.8.8?”

For this one, you will need to click on “View Site”.

This box will open in your browser:

Enter 8.8.8.8 into the “IP Address” box, click “Send Ping Request”.

The terminal will ping that network and reveal the flag:
